Vibrant community gardens scatter the streets of Walthamstow, and you can find their green shoots bursting from all sorts of every-day and out-of-the-way places - including churchyards, pocket parks, roadsides, planters and communal spaces.
This year Walthamstow Community Gardeners are hosting two walks - East and West - across this green stretch of urban east London. Starting at opposite ends of E17, they include some gardens you haven’t seen before and encompass the wide horizon of community gardening.
The West Walk starts at Cleveland Park Avenue (High St end, by large planter) E17 7BP.
The East Walk starts at Wood St station, street level E17 3LX.
Along the way, local gardeners will be on hand to introduce their creations and answer any questions you have about planting, planning and what it takes to get a community garden off the ground. They’ve got bog-gardens, verges, tree-pits, gravel-beds, veg plots and adopted graves to show you…
Also new this year is our collaboration with Borrowed Light Florals, whose wonderful natural sculptures will be displayed in the gardens.
The walks will meet in the middle, at the historic St Mary’s Church, where a free guided tour of the church and churchyard will be on offer (organised by the church) and possibly even a rare opportunity to go up the bell tower. Or you can explore on your own.
Refreshments, plants and local honey will be on sale (cash only).
