Walthamstow Market
Each year, Art Night focuses on a different area of London, working with its distinct identity, culture and architecture. In 2019, it was our turn.
Exploring the distinct identity, culture and architecture of Waltham Forest, Art Night 2019 celebrated the area's rich market culture through a series of new commissions along and around Walthamstow High Street – Europe’s longest outdoor market – and other local landmarks.
Art Night 2019 brought market to life out of hours, collaborating with various organisations from the borough to create lasting, shared memories among residents and visitors alike. For Art Night 2019 a curated programme of artists created new artworks inspired by the borough and the communities that call Waltham Forest home. Highlights of the curated programme include Barbara Kruger, who presented her first large-scale outdoor commission in 15 years in the UK, in Walthamstow’s Town Square - questioning consumerism, individual autonomy, desire and power.

Art Night Open is the festival’s programme of independently curated projects selected through an annual Open Call and runs alongside the curated programme.
Over 40 artistic projects and site-specific interventions were presented in the Art Night Open programme including multimedia installations, film screenings and live performances, karaoke, a gong sound bath, a laughter yoga workshop and the art world's first ever football cup.
