Virtual Culture Programme 2020
Dream Tapestry: Social Sewing Session
Zoom Workshop Saturday 12th December 15.00 -16.30pm
Artist Gayle Chong Kwan has been creating a communal tapestry of lockdown dreams during the Covid-19 Emergency. Starting with people who live in Waltham Forest, and nationally and internationally, Chong Kwan has collected descriptions of dreams that people had during lockdown. She has been embroidering these as hand sewn texts hidden in the inside seams and folds of clothes, to be exhibited online, in public, and which will eventually be donated to charity shops in Waltham Forest.
Artist Gayle Chong Kwan is inviting people to join her for a communal Dream Tapestry: Social Sewing Session, in which participants are invited to try out stitches that she has been using in her project, and to reference patterns and images from historical approaches to dreaming, such as Hervey de Saint-Denis’s visual of wheels of light and revolving suns in the 19th century.
Bring a piece of clothing, a needle and threads, and any lockdown dreams of your own with which you would like to work.
