We are delighted to announce that the headliners for this years Walthamstow Garden Party will be Amadou & Mariam.
On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July 2019, Walthamstow Garden Party returns to Lloyd Park as part of Waltham Forest London Borough of Culture 2019. Newly announced today, appearing on the Barbican Music Stage, are Amadou & Mariam alongside Blind Boys of Alabama; The Bongo Hop, a project presented by French trumpeter Etienne Sevet; and local grime acts Lemzi and Bonez.
Hailing from Mali, Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia first met as children at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind - both lost their vision at an early age. Over the course of three decades, Amadou (guitar and vocals) and Mariam (vocals) developed an international following and have recorded eight full-length albums and toured around the world. Their album Welcome To Mali, release in 2008, was nominated for the “Best Contemporary World Music Album” at the 52nd Grammy Awards.
Over the weekend Amadou & Mariam will join more than 70 local groups, organisations and businesses to present music, theatre, dance, circus, spoken word, crafts and food and drink alongside an international line-up on the Barbican Music Stage including Zara McFarlane, La-33, Carleen Anderson, Tássia Reis, Mayra Andrade, Orquesta Akokán and Renegade Brass Band.
Walthamstow Garden Party is completely free and open to all and is a global festival made locally, celebrating and powered by the incredible creativity of Waltham Forest.
